The short play can be seen as a playwright's business card. An appetizer to a larger meal. While it is certainly a strong first-impression, the short play truly exhibits the power of raw theatre.
I have had the fortune of being in an audience where there was open-sobbing at the end of a 5-minute play, another where the audience couldn't stop laughing. I have experienced a silence which cut like a knife, and I've seen audiences leaving the area transformed by what they experienced in 'only' six minutes.
Theatre is an extremely powerful performance form if done correctly, and the short play can provide a window into experiences than an audience may not have even though existed.
